Introduction

Moving to a new home in Canada — whether across town or across the country — involves a remarkable number of tasks, notifications, and logistics. Having a comprehensive moving checklist ensures nothing important is overlooked and helps you manage the process with less stress. Use this checklist as a master reference for your move.

8 Weeks Before Moving

Eight weeks out, begin by booking a reputable moving company. Get at least three quotes and check reviews on Google and the Better Business Bureau. Begin sorting through your belongings to decide what to keep, donate, sell, or discard. The less you move, the lower your moving costs and the less cluttered your new home. Begin collecting packing supplies: boxes, packing paper, tape, markers, and bubble wrap.

6 Weeks Before Moving

Notify the following of your upcoming address change: Canada Post (submit a mail forwarding request), your employer (for pay stubs and T4s), Service Canada (SIN and benefits), the CRA (for tax correspondence), your bank and financial institutions, insurance providers (home, auto, life), your doctor, dentist, and other healthcare providers, and your children’s schools.

4 Weeks Before Moving

Begin packing non-essential items — off-season clothing, books, decorative items, and items you will not need before the move. Label each box clearly with its contents and the room it belongs in. Arrange for the disconnection of utilities at your current address and the connection of utilities at your new home: electricity, gas, internet, and phone.

2 Weeks Before Moving

Pack the majority of your household, leaving out only essentials for the final days. Confirm all details with your moving company: date, time, address, access instructions, and payment method. Arrange for parking at both addresses on moving day. Pack an ‘essentials box’ with items you will need immediately at your new home: bedding, towels, toiletries, medications, phone chargers, and basic kitchen items.

Moving Day

Do a final walkthrough of your current home to ensure nothing has been left behind, all appliances are turned off, all windows and doors are locked, and the home is clean (if required by your lease or sale agreement). Photograph the condition of your previous home. Meet your movers, direct the unloading at your new home, and check items against your inventory as they are brought in.

After the Move

Update your driver’s licence and health card address at ServiceOntario (or the equivalent provincial agency in your province). Update your vehicle registration. Update your address on your Passport Canada file if you need a new passport. Notify your professional associations, subscriptions, and any other organizations that mail items to your address. Take time to explore your new neighbourhood and introduce yourself to your new neighbours.
